Town Centre Councillor Sir Ron Watson is actively pursuing with a degree of urgency policies to deal with a practical element of discarded chewing gum on the streets and pavements.
There is to be a report submitted to the Southport Operational Group at his request which will bring together options for better and more efficient cleaning machines in particular.
In addition whilst there are signs on public litter bins to show that these should be used for discarded gum Councillor Watson believes that these are not prominent enough and need to be revamped with much enhanced size.
Sir Ron said “I am afraid it is still a fact that the public do not respond as well as they should to attempts to improve environmental cleanliness and where chewing gum is perhaps the worst offender.
As a result and in no small part of the success of our Member of Parliament, Damien Moore, in the Town gaining access to some £36m for new developments and improvements we need to ensure that this level of investment is not devalued by the fact that we don’t get the basics right so I see this as being part of a comprehensive and overall approach particularly in the Town Centre and tourist related areas.
